The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is found in Angangueo, Michoacán, at 3200 meters above the sea level. The butterflies emigrate from Canada to México each year during the winter. They are born, they grow, they reproduce, and they die during the voyage and its stops, and it is their genetic memory that makes them arrive at these specific places. The video overlaps images of emigrants from all over the world, Cubans Mexicans, Curds, Bosnians, Africans, Chines, Haitians… The emptiness left by moving to new horizons, - the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence - is filled by the memories that follow them with the illusion of a new life. This video was produced for The Edge of Awareness, in the occasion of the 50th anniversary of WMO/World Health Organization curated by ART for The World in 1998-1999.
